Common Brake faults are:
- Siezed Caliper Pistons become stuck in the caliper and refuse to back off when brake pedal released. Causes premeature wear of the discs and pads and when advanced, overheating of the brakes.
- JUDDER – Symptoms: Front - Vibration and wobbling of the steering wheel when braking.
Cause: Usually driver error - Holding the footbrake down when car is stationary. This causes the brake pad to be in contact with the brake disc on one position on the disc (see below).
Symptoms: Rear - Vibration felt through the floor of the car. Cause - As above
- FADE - Symptoms - After very heavy braking the brakes are pressed but has little or no effect. Cause - Brakes have become very hot and the pad material becomes less effective. Also when the pad becomes hot it produces a gas which can build up between the brake pad and the brake discs which forces the pad away from the disc.
- NO PEDAL - Symptoms: After hard braking the pedal travels to the floor but no braking effect. Cause: Boiled brake fluid. When the brakes get very hot the brake fluid can boil and turn into a gas. When pressing the brake pedal all that happens it the gas becomes compressed instead of transferring the pressure to the brakes.
- SOFT PEDAL - Symptoms: Pedal feels soft like treading on a spong. Cause: Air in brake fluid or expanding brake hose (see also NO PEDAL)..
Common Driver faults are:
- RIDING – Holding the footbrake down when car is stationary. This causes the brake pad to be in contact with the brake disc on one position on the disc. If the disc is warm/hot the disc cools unevenly which can cause warping, the disc can develop a 'hot spot' where the pad is in contact, the pad can transfer a small amount of pad material onto the disc. One or all of these can cause 'judder' (see above). USE YOUR HANDBRAKE!
- Not allowing brakes to 'bed in'. New brakes should be used with caustion without excessive demands being made on them for a few hundred miles until the surface of the pad has worn away and the pad and disc have mated together. Full brake efficiency will not be noticed until after bedding in. Also excessive heating of a new disc can result in warping.

Braided Brake Hoses |
Why Braided Brake Hoses? Goodridge Stainless
steel braided brake hoses have a PTFE core not a
rubber core. Rubber cores expand when
pressurised. The almost zero expansion rate of
the PTFE contained within stainless steel
braiding braided brake
hoses means a positive effect on brake pedal
feel/pressure at the caliper and potentially
stopping distances. PTFE braided hoses also
have a higher burst point than rubber hoses.
Rubber hoses are more susceptible to internal
collapse resulting in non releasing brakes. Life
expectancy of rubber hoses is 60,000 miles or 3
years which ever comes first whereas a GB Hose set
is 150,000 miles or vehicle life which ever comes
first. Kit consists of 4 Goodridge brake hoses
and all copper washers which are needed for fitment.
The end fittings are in the better quality Stainless
steel and not zinc plated steel as
sold elsewhere.

Grooved Brake Discs

Why
Grooved Brake Discs? When Brakes get very hot they produce a gas whcih can build up between the surface of the brake disc and the brake pad. This layer of gas stops the pad from contacting with the brake disc so you get what is known as 'fade'. The grooves help to dissapate the gas by allowing it to escape through the grooves and the grooves also help to keep the
pad surface clean.
Grooved discs are directional and
must be fitted to the correct side of the vehicle.
To ensure maximum performance and service life and
to avoid damage, new brake pads, shoes and discs
require “bedding in”. Avoid violent braking from
high speed or excessive lighter braking applications
for at least 200 miles. Before fitting discs it is
vital to ensure that the vehicle hub is free of
debris/dirt and rust deposits, otherwise brake
judder may occur. Disc and drum braking surfaces
should be cleaned using a suitable brake cleaner
before fitting. |

In 1996 Black Diamond were invited to take part in the first Max Power magazine awards test against all the other major world brands in the performance braking market, Black Diamond came out on top by such a huge margin that Max Power decided not to issue a second place prize! Competitors were forced to wake up and in the next years awards BD came equal first with another brand and in the next awards 1998 / 1999 after a Black Diamond pad compound tweak (Black Diamond Predator), Black Diamond won out right again.
