MOT INFORMATION

MOT tests can be carried out on your car up to one month (less one day) prior to the expiry date of an existing UK MOT certificate..

On passing the MOT test, the vehicle will receive a certificate valid from the date of expiry of your existing MOT certificate.

All UK cars 3 years old and over require a valid MOT certificate by law. The contents and standards required are set by the Vehicle Inspectorate.  These standards are continuously reviewed and updated, for example all cars registered after 1992 require a catalytic converter and the Vehicle inspectorate has just introduced an amendment to the RfR (Reason for Rejection) regarding Regulation 54(2) of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulation 1986 which states "Every exhaust system and silencer..................shall not be altered to increase the noise made by the escape of exhaust gases". The MOT tester must now asses the level of exhaust noise at all engine speeds required for the emissions check and compare it to a similar vehicle fitted with a standard exhaust. This means that if you have a great big fat noisy decatted exhaust then expect to get an MOT failure sheet! Your car will need to have a more standard exhaust fitted in order to pass the MOT (wink !).

The MOT Car Test

What is involved?

An assistant is essential for proper conduct of the MOT test. You must not interrupt or distract the tester during the inspection.  The items tested are regularly reviewed by the Vehicle Inspectorate and items tested may be added to or removed from this list.  The following were correct at the time this page was created and should be used as a guide only and should not be considered as a legal guide to the MOT test.
